Fitial OKs $13K for Rota casino commission

Gov. Benigno R. Fitial signed yesterday a local law appropriating $13,000 for the Rota Casino Gaming Commission's fiscal year 2012 operations, even as the island currently has no operating casino since Rota Treasure Island Corp. temporarily stopped operations in March 2011.

Rep. Teresita Santos' (Ind-Rota) House Local Bill 17-83 is now Rota Local Law 17-22. Santos said yesterday she's thankful for the administration's action on the bill.

Of the total appropriated amount, $5,000 will be for legal counsel, $7,500 for commissioners' compensation, and $500 for operations.

Commission chair Laura Manglona said the commission will decide on the status of the conditional license issued in July 2011 to the second casino investor-the owner of Rota Resort.

Former Commission executive director Alfredo Antolin reiterated on Monday that RCGC rules require “automatic revocation” of a conditional license if the casino investor fails to pay the $400,000 license within 90 days of issuance of a conditional license such as in the case of Rota Resort Hotel.

But Manglona said the commission has yet to make a decision on the issue.
