Tropical Depression Haikui (12W) yesterday continued to intensify but drifted westward away from the CNMI.
According to the National Weather Service in Guam, as of 1pm, the center of Tropical Depression Haikui was located 70 miles south-southwest of Iwo To Island, 535 miles northwest of Pagan, 705 miles north-northwest of Saipan, and 785 miles north-northwest of Guam.
Gov. Benigno R. Fitial advised the public especially beachgoers, fishermen, tourists, swimmers, divers, and surfers to continue exercise caution along exposed reefs and beaches.
NWS said packing maximum sustained winds at 35 miles per hour, Tropical Depression Haikui is moving toward west-northwest at 9 miles per hour and is expected to maintain this general heading with an increase in forward speed during the next 24 hours.
The Emergency Management Office said most of the heavy showers and thunderstorms associated with Haikui have shifted southwestward away from the center into the Philippine Sea, farther away from the Marianas.
EMO said Haikui is still expected to move slowly west and maintain moderate monsoon conditions to islands in the far northern CNMI during the next several days.
