Bill giving public lands for future Tinian Veterans Cemetery heads to governor

The Senate passed on Wednesday a bill reserving 2 hectares of public land on Tinian for the future site of a Tinian Veterans Cemetery, eight months after the House passed the measure.

Rep. Trenton Conner's (R-Tinian) House Bill 17-196 or the Tinian Veterans Cemetery Designation Act of 2011 passed the Senate by a vote of 7-0.

The bill now heads to the governor for action.

HB 17-196 says families from Tinian who have loved ones buried in Marpi on Saipan are unable to afford the exorbitant airline fee, car rental, food, and other expenses when traveling to Saipan to visit their deceased loved ones.

“The financial and emotional burden that is placed on each member of the bereaved family is too burdensome during their time of loss coupled with the current financial difficulty many of our people face today because of our ailing economy,” it says.
