Guidelines out on flashing traffic lights

Acting Public Safety Commissioner Ambrosio T. Ogumoro is reminding motorists and pedestrians about the rules governing malfunctioning or out-of-service traffic safety lights.

In a statement yesterday, Ogumoro issued the following guidelines:

When a red or yellow flashing light is used as a traffic signal it shall require obedience by vehicular traffic as follows:

(a) Flashing red (stop signal). When a red flashing light is used as a traffic signal at an intersection, operators of vehicles shall stop before entering the nearest crosswalk at an intersection or at a limit line when marked or, if none then before entering the intersection. The right to proceed is subject to the rules applicable after making a stop at a stop sign.

(b) Flashing yellow (caution signal). When a yellow flashing light is used as a traffic signal, operators of vehicles may proceed through the intersection or past the signal only with caution.

“Please observe all traffic signals, devices and obey all traffic laws,” said Ogumoro. “In recognition of 'Child Passenger Safety Week' I urge everyone to help reduce injuries and save lives by buckling up themselves and their children-every trip, every time.” (DPS)
