Security guard killed in car crash
Wife also seriously injured in accident

A security guard was killed while his wife was seriously injured when a car he was driving slammed into the concrete fence of the Silver Hotel building on Beach Road, Chalan Kanoa Saturday early morning.

Saipan Tribune learned that the security guard identified as a certain Rajesh, a Nepalese, died on the spot due to multiple injuries.

The wife, a Chinese national, was taken to the Commonwealth Health Center due to serious injuries. She was last reported still at CHC, but is now able to talk.

Police are investigating the possibility that alcohol and speeding were factors in the crash.

The Department of Public Safety has yet to release information about the accident to the media.

Saipan Tribune learned that Rajesh picked up his wife from her work in Susupe and that they were heading home south direction aboard a Toyota Echo on Beach Road when the accident happened.

Witnesses said they heard a loud screeching sound of a vehicle followed by a loud boom.

Apparently, the car swerved on the shoulder of the road and proceeded to a vacant lot next to the former Pacific Gardenia Hotel.

The car then rammed into a tarpaulin sign for Sandy Beach Homes, before it slammed into a concrete wall on the side of the Silver Hotel building.

The strong impact shattered the concrete fence measuring about 3 to 4 feet.

Responding police officers and medics first removed the wife from the wrecked vehicle.

Witnesses said it took a while for the officers and medics to extricate the security guard from the vehicle using Jaws of Life.

Jaws of Life is a huge tool used to free people from mangled vehicles and burning and collapsed buildings.

Saipan Tribune learned that prior to the accident, the guard reported to work at Joeten Hafa Adai Shopping Center in western Garapan. It was not clear whether he attended a party before picking up his wife from work.

The couple has two children-ages 8 and 10 years old.

The security guard is the fifth fatality in a car crash in the CNMI this year.

Last June 23, three brothers died when a pickup truck they were driving swerved and smashed into a makeshift garage along Isa Drive between the Capital Hill and Santa Lourdes area. Investigators determined that alcohol was involved in the crash.

On March 28, 2012, a motorist died after he reportedly suffered a heart attack, causing his vehicle to swerve on Beach Road in Susupe and struck two vehicles that were parked at the Joeten Center compound.
