Five students were big winners in this year’s Math Court competition for middle school held Saturday at the Saipan Community School.
Beibei Chen of Agape Christian School walked off with the gold medal, while the silver medal went to Won Jun Kim of Marianas Baptist Academy. Emerging third, fourth, and fifth placers were MBA’s John Robert Tam, Young Jessica Cho, and Samual Park.
The Math Court competition is a series of meets that occur throughout the school year. At each meet, several tests are offered to measure the mathematical achievement of students at every grade level and award those students showing the highest levels of mastery at each level. The competition has three divisions: K-5, 6th-8th, and 9th-12th.
In Saturday’s regional competition for middle schools, 32 students advanced to this round as finalists from the pre-regional meets held at Garapan Elementary School.
For the competition’s team winners, the gold medal went to the team of Agape Christian School-Marianas Baptist Academy, composed of Beibei Chen, Mengge Lai, John Robert Tam, and Samuel Park.
The silver medal went to Hopwood Junior High School’s Team Hilitai II composed of Sophia Kim, Julie Da Hyeon Kwon, Ma. Chrizelle Omotoy, and Ivan Seo.
According to Math Court coordinator for middle school Dora B. Miura, the individual medalists have the opportunity to join the High School Regional competition on Jan. 12, 2013, at Saipan Southern High School for a chance to be a member of Team CNMI. These students, should they choose to compete, are automatically alternates for Team CNMI in the national event.
The CNMI Math Court competition began in 2005. In 2010, the CNMI sent its first state team to the American Regions Mathematics League Competition.
