The Mount Carmel School’s Theater Club opens 2013 with the staging this month of a musical adaptation of the ’80s blockbuster Footloose.
The show, slated for Jan. 24 and 25, will feature dancing to top 40 hits such as Let’s Hear It For The Boy, Almost Paradise, Holding Out For A Hero, and the title song, Footloose. This musical performance will mark the club’s 29th production since its inception in 1996.
Preparations for the show began in August last year when the Theatre Club selected senior and longtime art designer Ashley Olarte as the director for the club’s next production. Olarte, in turn, chose Footloose for the club’s performance.
Asked why she picked the show, Olarte said: “I love how there’s this girl, Ariel, who is trapped and who wants to escape, if only by dancing. That’s something I and many other people I know can relate to.”
Once the club was granted the license for the show from Rodgers and Hammerstein Theatricals, auditions were held and rehearsals and choreography sessions began soon afterwards. Production crewmembers also began preparing the set, props, costumes, hair, makeup, and the technical design for the show.
The show’s lead actors are Theatre Club veterans Victor Cabrera and Janela Revilla, who will play Ren McCormack and Ariel Moore, respectively.
Cabrera is nervous but looks forward to the performance. “Having seen how this role was portrayed in the movies, it has been an honor playing the role in such an amazing play,” he said.
Revilla echoed Cabrera: “It’s going to be exciting It’s a play that we can all relate to as teenagers.”
For a show that is all about dancing, the club turned to Mount Carmel School 2005 AlumKnight Emmanuel Borja, who was a choreographer for dance troupes at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Borja has been working with the cast for months now, teaching them choreography for key dance numbers in the show.
The Theatre Club’s production of Footloose will run at 7pm each night on Jan. 24 and 25 at Fiesta Resort and Spa’s Hibiscus Hall. Admission is $5.
This production is presented through a special arrangement with R&H Theatricals, www.rnh.com. For more information, call 234-6184 or email email@example.com.
Footloose is based on the 1984 film of the same name starring Kevin Bacon, Lori Singer, Dianne Wiest, and John Lithgow and directed by Herbert Ross. The show was adapted for the stage by the movie’s screenwriter and Oscar winner Dean Pitchford and Walter Bobbie for a Broadway opening in the summer of 1998. The show features music by Tom Snow, lyrics by Dean Pitchford, and additional music by Eric Carmen, Sammy Hagar, Kenny Loggins, and Jim Steinman. Footloose recently regained popularity with the release of the 2011 film remake starring Kenny Wormald, Julianne Hough, Andie MacDowell, and Dennis Quaid and directed by Craig Brewer.
