Guevarra takes bartenders’ cocktail contest
‘Taste’ extended to 11pm on May 25

Ronnie Guevarra of Coral Ocean Point Resort served up the best drink, dubbed “Cool Summer Mojito,” to win the Bartender’s Cocktail Competition on May 18 at the 15th Annual Taste of the Marianas International Food Festival & Beer Garden at American Memorial Park.

Guevarra bested six other bartenders to waltz away $150 richer and with other in-kinds prizes for his efforts. He was followed by first runner-up Alvin Palma of Saipan World Resort, second runner-up Jay Santos of Zebra Bar, and third runner-up Rizalina Elchico with Hyatt Regency Saipan.

Judges for the competition were Annamae Adaza (president, United Filipino Organization), Socorro Huliganga (assistant F&B manager, Fiesta Resort & Spa), Elvira Yagi (owner, Yuchiro’s Printing), and William Retardo (executive chef, Mariana Resort & Spa).

Tomorrow, May 25, from 6pm to 11pm marks the final night of the annual celebration in honor of May Tourism Month. The night’s entertainment lineup includes FBI (6pm), Uncle Ben’s Music and Dance (7pm), MHS Poksai INATUA (7:30pm), Alana Ia (8:30pm), Kagman High School (9:30pm), Alan School of Dance (10pm), and M21 Band (11:30pm.)

The highly anticipated Chefs Competition kicks off this Saturday at 7pm, with chefs from participating island hotels serving up their best dishes incorporating a pre-selected cut of Certified Angus Beef and local ingredients. Last year’s champion was Mariana Resort’s executive chef William Retardo.

“We’re looking forward to another strong turnout on the event on the final night of Taste,” said Marianas Visitors Authority community projects manager Martin Duenas. “Not only are the regular vendors serving up delicious choices at very affordable prices, but the chefs always put a lot of time into their dishes and décor with the Chefs Competition. We invite everyone to come down and enjoy the evening with us. ”

The festival offers international cuisine at affordable prices by 16 hotels and restaurant vendors, non-stop live entertainment on the main stage, nightly contests on the secondary stage, and arts and crafts sales.

Dinner and dessert choices will be offered Saturday by Fiesta Resort & Spa, Hyatt Regency Saipan, Pacific Islands Club Saipan, Canton Restaurant, Furusato Restaurant, Sierra Pearl Shakes, Capricciosa/Tony Roma’s, D’Elegance Café, Herman’s Modern Bakery, Hula Girl/3’s, Thai House Restaurant, Poon’s Restaurant, Tropical Chill, Coral Ocean Point Resort, Mariana Resort & Spa, and Saipan World Resort.
