A Japanese junior college is offering two full scholarships to CNMI residents.
Located in Minokamo City in the Gifu Prefecture, the Shogen Junior College is among the smallest in Japan, with a current population of less than 40 students. It is an accredited college known for its Zen-oriented curriculum and its efforts to teach and preserve Japanese traditions, arts, and customs.
Last month, Shogen Junior College president Sogen Roshi Yamakawa and Northern Marianas College president Antonio Deleon Guerrero signed an agreement to conduct cultural and educational exchanges between the two colleges and their communities.
The exchange program is intended to teach students to appreciate Japanese traditions, arts and customs and to help strengthen cultural ties, understanding, goodwill, and peace between Japan and the Northern Marianas.
Pursuant to the agreement, Shogen is now seeking two CNMI residents for full scholarship to attend the two-year college.
The current scholarships offered will be for no more than two years, beginning in September 2006.
Scholars will attend classes typically offered in colleges, including math, psychology, language, philosophy, history and literature. But they will also enroll in classes in Zen studies, traditional Japanese arts, tea ceremony, ceramic arts, calligraphy, flower arrangement, culinary arts, and the like.
Those eligible to apply are U.S. citizens over 18 years old and living in the Commonwealth. While college-bound or college-enrolled individuals are targeted, individuals not enrolled in college are also eligible. Preference will be given to individuals who exhibit a strong desire to learn about Japanese traditions, arts and culture.
The scholarships will cover all tuition, fees, books, lodging, meals, and one round-trip transportation between Saipan and Shogen Junior College.
Japanese language skills are not required, but some familiarity with conversational Japanese could be helpful.
Individuals interested in more information about the scholarship program may contact the NMC President's Office at 234-5498.
