More locals applying with merchant marines

More locals are applying to become merchant marines so they could work aboard the preposition ships, according to marine science technician David Doyle.

In an interview with the Saipan Tribune yesterday, Doyle said they have about 25 people who are supposed to come in at the regional exam center at Horiguchi Building in Garapan.

As of yesterday morning, Doyle said that eight to nine people have showed up, but they want as many applicants as possible.

He said the U.S. Coast Guard from Guam came over to Saipan for the two-day regional exam center that started yesterday. It will resume today from 9am to 12 noon.

Doyle said the Coast Guards are doing verification and fingerprinting for locals applying for merchant marines or updating their licenses.

“We're just providing services for them [applicants] because we have some Coast Guard from Guam, and we are just providing services in our office,” he said.

“Some of them are trying to get original licenses so they can work on the proposition boats. We're just helping them get their applications,” he said.

The applications, Doyle said, will be sent to Honolulu for approval.

Every couple of years, merchant marines have to renew their license, he added.
