A veteran of foreign war not forgotten

VFW Post 3457 commander Mariano Fajardo presents a memorial commendation plaque from the U.S. Veterans of Foreign Wars to Greg Calvo on behalf of his brother, Sgt. Robert S. Calvo, during an awarding ceremony at the VFW Post 3457 office along Beach Road, Garapan. (Jacqueline Hernandez) Even though it has been over a year since he passed away, veteran of foreign war Robert Calvo was remembered during a memorial commendation presentation at the VFW Post Canteen on Nov. 22.

Calvo was inducted in the U.S. Army in July 1968. He served a one-year tour in Vietnam, prior to his expiration of service in July 1970. Robert was a light weapons infantryman. He was a sergeant when he was discharged honorably.

Calvo received the Combat Infantry Badge, Air Medal, two overseas bars, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. Robert would be 57 years old today.

Post Commander Mariano Fajardo presented the commendation to Robert’s brother, Gregorio Calvo, who will in turn present the certificate to Robert’s siblings on Rota.

As part of the VFW’s Americanism Program effort, national recognition was extended to CNMI Army Reserve fallen soldiers SSgt Wilgene Lieto and Cpl. Derence Jack.

Furthermore, the August Taga Air plane crash rescuers were honored with VFW National Life Saving awards, simultaneously.

VFW Post 3457 is still seeking a memorial commendation for Sgt. William Chen, the CNMI’s first Iraq war casualty. (PR)
