Red-hot success for Tinian Hot Pepper Festival

This year's Tinian Hot Pepper Festival was SO HOT, HOT, HOT!

Yes, the Tinian Hot Pepper Festival was a resounding success!

The local event hosted by the Tinian Mayor's Office and the Marianas Visitors Authority, which started in May 17, 2004 has proven to be one of the favorites for locals and visitors alike.

The popular Hot Pepper Eating Contest was back with Kulio B. Cabrera just barely edging out Julian Santos on Saturday, munching and swallowing his hot pepper-laced noodles like there were no hot peppers even present, of course it took a few seconds after he finished the noodles and broth for it to really kick in, pika, pika, pika!

With this year's booths offering a variety of locally made handicrafts, delectable spicy, and not too spicy dishes, and refreshments, the taste of the event filled the air.

A new and welcome addition to the festival, the dragon boat races, with boats on loan from the Tinian Mayor's Office, were especially exciting with four teams vying to be the first for both bragging rights and prizes-a team sponsored by JC Café restaurant on Tinian won the event by a narrow time beating the Mayor's Office by only 38 seconds.

Other contests such as the tasty and spicy Kadon Pika Contest with dishes tastily prepared and colorfully presented, the Umang Race with children catching their racers either on the beach that day or finding it near their homes, the Umang Decorating Competition showing uniquely and artistically painted umangs being shown by the children, the Talaya Throw showing the finés and skills of the local fishermen, and since the event was held on the beach, of course the Beach Volleyball Competition had local teams setting, spiking and cheering to all the fun. Among others, coordinators of the event included a ChaCha Contest, Booth Decoration and the Pika Fest Logo.

The change in venue for the festival was met with approval by everyone, having it at the picturesque setting of Tachogna Beach, adding to the atmosphere and making the festival a beautiful local event for our visitors to enjoy.

Special thanks to all the participants but most especially to the contributors-The Tinian Mayor's Office, Tinian MVA Members, Western Union, MarPac & the Northern Marianas College. (PR)
