The Carolinian Affairs Office will host the first symposium on the Carolinian language next week.
The Carolinian Language Symposium will be held April 18-19, 2007 at the Multi-Purpose Center in Susupe. It will be conducted entirely in the Carolinian language.
Angie W. Iginoef-Mangarero, the governor's executive assistant for Carolinian affairs, said the purpose of the symposium is to preserve and promote the indigenous Carolinian language and culture.
Catherine Perry Anderson and Magin Michael Iginoef, among other speakers, will deliver inspirational talks. Rep. Cinta M. Kaipat, Lino M. Olopai, and other guests will make presentations on different aspects of the Carolinian culture. Traditional dancers Melvin Faisao, Joe Ruak and Jess Ruak will also perform.
Students from Saipan's three public high schools-Kagman High School, Saipan Southern High School, and Marianas High School-will be present.
A Carolinian translation of the Bible, an English-Carolinian dictionary and a book compilation of Carolinian chants will be exhibited at the symposium. Lessons on weaving, mwar making and other Carolinian crafts will also be presented.
On Thursday, Gov. Benigno R. Fitial issued a memorandum urging department and activity heads to allow government employees to attend the symposium “provided public services are not interrupted.” He said participating employees may be granted administrative leave.
