A son of Guam was among two soldiers killed Thursday in Iraq.
Private First Class John D. Flores, 21, of Barrigada, along with a U.S. Army Sergeant from San Valley, California, was killed by small arms fire in Baghdad, the U.S. Defense confirmed.
Guam Congresswoman Madeleine Bordallo, in a statement issued yesterday, said she is deeply saddened to learn the island has lost another son in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
“In this time of sorrow, I join our people in offering condolences and prayers to PFC John Flores’ family, loved ones and friends,” Bordallo said.
Bordallo said PFC John Flores was a fine soldier with a young family who served the nation with selfless dedication.
“He answered the call to duty of our nation and he paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom-we owe him a debt of gratitude. We honor his service and we pray for his family. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to his wife, Charlene, his daughter Chloe, and his extended family and friends," Bordallo said.
PFC Flores died on May 3, 2007 in Baghdad, Iraq as a result of injuries sustained during combat operations. Flores was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany.
As of Saturday, 3,362 members of the U.S. military have reportedly died since the start of the Iraq war in March 2003.
The figures show that per capita Micronesean casualties in the Iraq war are four times higher than for soldiers from the U.S. mainland.
