Volcanic haze blown to Saipan and Tinian again

The CNMI Emergency Management Office issued a volcanic haze and sulfur advisory late afternoon yesterday, saying that light winds will be carrying gas from Anatahan to Saipan and Tinian last night.

EMO said that residents of Saipan and Tinian should notice a slight sulfur smell and some reduction in visibility due to haze last night until midnight. Those with respiratory problems were advised to stay indoors.

“Light north winds are carrying gases and haze from Antahan to our area. The satellite images also shows some ash is being emitted by the volcano but the ash is mainly confined near and just east of the volcano,” EMO said.

The haze and gas extending south toward Saipan and Tinian was expected to arrive yesterday evening. The haze and light odor of sulfur was expected to mingle around until the wind shift enough to the east to blow the gases and haze out to sea and away from the islands.

The wind flow pattern was expected to change this morning.

Based on the SO2 analyzer reading at the EMO, it indicated sulfur concentrations of 113ppb (parts per billions) as of 5:45pm.

“Concentrations of volcanic gases should be low but the haze and odor may bother people with respiratory problems. People who experience breathing problems should remain indoors,” said EMO.

All mariners were also reminded to take precautionary measures due to low visibility.

The advisory was issued in consultation with the U.S. Geological Service and the National Weather Service in Guam.
