Members and officials of the Pacific Postsecondary Education Council have chosen Northern Marianas College president Dr. Carmen Fernandez to be their new chairperson during a recent election.
The Pacific Postsecondary Education Council, or PPEC, is composed of chief executive officers and presidents of the region's colleges and universities, including American Samoa Community College, the College of Micronesia-FSM, the College of the Marshall Islands, Guam Community College, Palau Community College, the University of Guam, the University of Hawaii Community College System office, the University of Hawaii at Hilo, Hawaii Community College, Honolulu Community College, and Kapiolani Community College. Its objective is to encourage and develop regional planning of postsecondary education throughout the Pacific.
Fernandez has been meeting regularly with the members of PPEC as they address a range of issues that affect students, like articulation and the seamless transfer of credits between member colleges.
“Your support truly exemplifies the purpose of this great organization, which is to support each other and to ensure that we continuously excel as American higher education institutions,” said Fernandez of her new appointment.
Fernandez also thanked PPEC members for their strong support during NMC's show-cause period.
NMC was severely sanctioned last year with a show cause standing due to the two team recommendations that were left uncorrected. WASC reaffirmed NMC's four years accreditation to 2012 early this month.
NMC board chair Charles Cepeda offered his congratulations to Fernandez on being selected as the new chairwoman of PPEC.
