The Commonwealth Election Commission spent over $10,000 to hire a helicopter to get the votes of four residents of Agrihan.
Saipan Tribune learned that the chopper carrying two designated poll workers and a police officer left Saipan for Agrihan at 8:30am on Saturday.
After getting the votes of four residents, the chopper returned to Saipan at 3:30pm.
In an interview with Saipan Tribune yesterday, Election Board chair Frances M. Sablan confirmed that they hired a helicopter to fly to Agrihan and get the votes of four residents there.
“That is a tradition and at the same time our obligation to make sure that we get all the votes,” Sablan said.
She said two designated poll workers were aboard the helicopter.
When asked for the exact cost of hiring the helicopter, Sablan said she is not aware of the specific amount but that it was around the $10,000 figure.
Last month, Super Typhoon Choi-Wan devastated Agrihan and Alamagan.
The remaining eight residents of Alamagan were safely evacuated to Saipan, but the four residents on Agrihan opted to stay on the island.
