New program to offer rebates for Energy Star appliances

CNMI households that are thinking of replacing their old refrigerators, washing machines, or air conditioning units should do so beginning April 1 this year.

That's when the CNMI Division of Energy will launch its Energy Star Appliance Rebate program, which will give away rebate vouchers to consumers who will replace their old appliances with Energy Star-rated ones.

Qualified refrigerators and clothes washers will both be granted a $300 rebate while qualified room air conditioning units will be granted $150 rebates. The program, funded by a $100,000 stimulus fund grant, covers only these three appliances, according to the division's Web site.

The vouchers will be given away for a limited time until funds run out.

Right now, the Energy Division still in the process of determining which retailers will be offering the three types of Energy Star-qualified products.

Individuals interested in obtaining vouchers can apply on a first-come, first-serve basis at the CNMI Energy Office on Capitol Hill. Vouchers may also be printed from the Web site at www.cnmienergy.com.

All vouchers must be signed and submitted to the CNMI Energy Division office in order to qualify. Those with disabilities can make arrangements with the division for paperwork to be signed and picked up simultaneously. Picture identification and a copy of a recent Commonwealth Utilities Corp. utility bill are required at the time of application.

All applicants must sign a release of CUC billing information for data collection and analysis purposes three months before and six months after buying new Energy Star appliances.

There is a limit of one voucher per product type per household.

Applicants must also agree to surrender their old appliances to the program recycler no later than two weeks after receiving receipt of their replacement appliance(s). Applicants must also give recyclers directions to their homes in order to pick up the used appliances.

Energy Star currently offers hundreds of appliances, electronics, computers, plumbing and building products, fans, and lighting products. Freezers, boilers, fans, light fixtures, battery chargers, and windows are not included in the CNMI rebate program.

Visit www.energystar.gov for the complete list of products and brand names.
