(Contributed Photo) Eight Head Start centers have successfully completed a series of Motheread/Fatheread adult course trainings for the 2012 fall schedule. Adult literacy courses were held at the San Antonio center, Dandan center, Chalan Kanoa center, Tanapag center, Kagman center, JMR (Garapan) center, Oleai center, and Tinian center. Each center concluded their class sessions with a mini-certificate awarding ceremony and refreshments afterwards.

The CNMI Motheread/Fatheread program covers three major activities that define family literacy in the Head Start Program.1) Parent and child literacy activity. 2) Training for parents as the primary teacher of their children. 3) Age-appropriate education for children that prepares them for success in school.

For the duration of the classes, parent trainers exposed participants to varied multi-cultural children’s literature that will engage their children at home. Effective research-based techniques and strategies were shared in the course that will lay the foundation for reading success. Motheread certified trainers also emphasized the role that parents play as the first teacher of their child, and that a lifetime of literacy starts at home.

Motheread certified trainers who facilitated the adult courses for this cycle were Celina Foreman, Leila Staffler, Fred Camacho, Nolyn Villagomez, Bryan Manabat, Lilia King, and Evelyn Evangelista. Story sharing instructors that worked with the participant’s children were Joselyn Eusebio of Gospel Light Day Care Center, Romeo Silvano of Sunrise Day Care Center, Joelyn Varona, Evangeline Espanola, and Shirley Digma of SDA Day Care Center, Joan Ordona of Loving Hands Day Care Center, and Mary Antoniette Santos of Tinian Public Library.

A total of 39 parent participants completed the course sessions. The San Antonio center participants were Rosalinda Ramos, Amri Castro, Zenaida Tuazon, Priscilla Dulay, Siomina Asep, Joan Bahilo, and Jessica Ho. Dandan center participants were Edwin Corrales, Raquel Camacho, Guillermo Santos, Tina Passi, Remedios Dela Cruz, and Rogelio Anciado. Chalan Kanoa center participants were Edel May Austin, Kimjona Taitingfong, Sophia Aldan, Dhan Thapa, and Rosalinda Bartolome. Tanapag center participants were Tina Marquez and Jessica Santos.
