Shotgun approach

People of the CNMI, what do you think about Congressman Stanley Torres introducing his H.B. 17-317 to legalize 12-gauge shotgun for bird hunting.

In my opinion as a voter of the CNMI, I totally oppose his bill, why? Because it does not fit the picture. If there are ducks, pigeons, or sports for shooting then I would agree with the congressman's bill.

For example, like in the U.S., if fruit bats are not endangered species I would agree, but for shooting birds is a question for me as a voter. A shotgun is a very powerful rifle that if someone was to fire, the bullet shell would spread small round pellets in different directions.

If there are endangered species of birds on sight, for sure they would get killed from the pellets. Endangered species of birds are protected by both local and federal laws. If someone shoots and kills these birds then the person responsible, if caught, would be persecuted by law.

I was hoping congressman Torres, would have introduced a bill to allow only air pump guns for hunting birds that is legal to hunt. In my suggestion, air guns are good because it is a single shot. The congressman said it is much safer having the shotgun at home. My question to the congressman is that those guns that are legalized today are not really good and you don't feel safe at home. Congressman Torres, sorry to say this, but I think something is not right. Just like I said, it does not fit the picture. In my opinion, I believe the congressman's bill is not intended for the birds but for protection. My suggestion to the lawmakers, is please do not pass this bill for the better safety of the CNMI people. Please let's keep it this way, and by not legalizing all kinds of guns while it's not too late to regret.

In my own sense of humor, I would say I may not always be right but I'm never wrong.

Ray Agulto,
Kannat Tabla
