Saipan wins 2012 Marianas Shootout 8-Ball championship

The handpicked Saipan foursome was made up of standout Saipan Billiards Association members such as Agingan Division most valuable player Chester Hamoy and Obyan Division MVP Rey Pinangay as well as veteran players Mark Butac and Ed Suzuki.

They won individual trophies and shared a modest cash prize.

Guam players include Guam Budweiser League's Raul Pascua, Victor Ryan Sr., Rick Camacho, and Robert Johnson.

Team Guam's Pascua actually won the very first singles match over Hamoy, but the group suddenly succumbed to the host team in the next eight pairings.

Hamoy's teammates all worked out two flawless matches and he himself also recovered for a pair of victories, the last being the clincher.

The event was formatted as a “race-to-eight” and included four rounds of singles matches with a final singles tiebreaker, if needed.

Needless to say, the Saipan crew made light work of the visitors after a small stumble out of the gate.

This was the second year that the neighboring islands' billiards associations came together to put on the event. Last year was formatted as a three-on-three tournament, which saw Saipan's Rolly Villanueva, Patrick Taitano, and Chester Cuento emerge as victors, 9-5.

In related news, the deadline to register for the Saipan Billiards Association's upcoming Budweiser Open 8-Ball League season is July 7. A coaches and team representatives meeting is also scheduled for July 2 at SOS Bar & Grill.
