The CNMI was represented in two off-island competitions last week.
In the Oceania Regional Championships 2012 held at the Barlow Park in Cairns, Australia, from June 27 to 29, the Commonwealth entered seven athletes in the throwing and running events in the annual competition. The seven-man CNMI team was composed of Yvonne Bennett, Lia Rangamar, Orrin Pharmin, Beo Ngirchongor, Reylynn Sapong, Rachel Abrams, and Michael Mancao.
In the Lixil Ironman 70.3 Centrair in Tokoname, Japan, Saipan triathlete Mieko Carey joined the women's 30 to 34 age group and topped her division, placing sixth overall in the women's and No. 145 among the more than 1,000 finishers. She completed the 1.9-kilometer (1.2-mile) swim, 90km bike, and 13km run in 5:01:40.
In local events, on-going competitions on Saipan continued.
In the DLX/DL JOS caging, the race for playoff spots heated up with the Fastbreakers and KFC/Taco Bell securing two of the four spots in Bracket A, while Team Pogi sealed one playoff ticket in Bracket A. Sinigang, AD 31, Docomo, and Gualo Rai are still in the race after posting separate wins last week.
Still in basketball, DYS/Bayani swept the regular season of the U20 division of the UFO Docomo Pacific Cup, while SIP/Barney's and Hi-Five also notched wins, heading into the playoff round.
In soccer, Shirley's FC clinched the championship in the 2012 NMIFA Women's Fall League after slipping past Paire, 6-5, in a penalty shootout. Mikky Vargas nailed the go-ahead goal in the penalty shootout, while goalie Jhaneeka Atalig made a game-winning save for the undefeated champion.
In swimming, Tsunami Saipan dominated the 2012 Saipan International Open Water Flipper Tournament. Rezne Wong and Kensuke Kimura topped the men's open division of the 1.5-kilometer race, posting identical times of 25:01, while Angel Marie Tan ruled the women's division with her 27:06.
In Little League, the CNMI Junior and Major All-Star teams left the island to represent the Commonwealth in the Asia Pacific Regional Tournament. The Junior All-Stars will be competing in Vietnam, while the Major All-Stars will be playing in Chinese-Taipei.
