Eugene Manglona exploded for 35 points in his debut in the 2012 DLX/Gualo Rai Invitational Basketball League to lift Anjie's Boys to a 71-68 victory over QQ Rent-A-Car last Saturday night at the Gualo Rai Basketball Court.
The Anjie's Boys-QQ tiff was the second game featured in the opening day of the DLX B league and the victory allowed the former to join Brgy. San Antonio in the winners' circle. San Antonio stunned the defending champion KFC/Taco Bell in the opener, 73-65.
Manglona was at the forefront of Anjie's Boys' offense in every quarter and his teammates' quickness was too much for the much older and slower players. Manglona scored 12 straight markers at one point in the third quarter, turning a 33-26 halftime advantage to a 55-42 lead. The former Kagman High School standout finished the third period alone with 14 points, while CNMI U17 National Team member Jimmy Tudela scored Anjie's Boys' last 6 points in that canto to stretch their lead to double digits.
Marlon Sison, Kermit Concepcion, and Joe Acosta tried to bring QQ back into the game in the fourth, as they combined for 20 of the team's 25 points. However, Manglona was still there to halt QQ's rally, adding 9 more markers in the final canto. Ezra Caro also hit timely baskets in the fourth, chipping in 5, while Irvyn Malonzo made two free throws in the homestretch to seal the win.
Caro was the other double-figure scorer for Anjie's Boys, nailing 15, while Tudela contributed 9. Sison had 17 to lead QQ, which also got 16 markers from Concepcion.
Concepcion scored QQ's first 6 points to keep the team afloat after the opening quarter, 11-13. However, Anjie's Boys widened the gap in the second canto, 33-26, as QQ failed to neutralize Manglona, who drained 8 in that frame.
Manglona then had his best game in the third period, getting away with four fastbreak straight layups and one and-1 play to pad Anjie's Boys' lead, while Tudela and Caro also used their height and mobility advantage to get inside points against the much slower frontliners of QQ.
Meanwhile, four other teams were scheduled to play their first game last night. The second edition of the DLX B league has 18 squads.
