Hoops outlasts QQ Rent-A-Car in double overtime

Hoops' Sahj Hossain tries to drive past QQ Rent-A-Car's Mike Bondoc in Sunday's Summer Jam Basketball Tournament matchup held at the Garapan Basketball Court. (Walter Cepeda Sutherland) Hoops fashioned out a hard-earned 88-80 double overtime victory against QQ Rent-A-Car as the Summer Jam Basketball Tournament tipped off last weekend at the Garapan Basketball Court.

Meanwhile, Mobil ran Team 1 to the ground, 73-56, last Saturday. The second game was postponed due to rain, the same fate that befell Sunday's second game.

The tournament resumes this Saturday with three games starting at 6pm.

The tentative matchups include Hip Hop Thunder challenging Dante's team at 6pm, QQ Rent-A-Car taking on Team 1 at 7pm, followed by Mobil against Hoops at 8pm. Players are requested to show up 15 minutes before game time to warm up.

Last Sunday, Hoops got off to a bad start allowing QQ Rent-A-Car to take a 34-21 after the first half thanks to a late 3-pointer by Marlon Sison and an 8-point bundle by Lerio Pagarao.

Rolly Paraiso and Mike Bondoc chipped in another 13 markers to help QQ Rent-A-Car take the reins of the game.

Hoops kept chomping at the bit, however, and grinded out a 59-all deadlock at the end of regulation.

Trevor Ogumoro took over in the second half and sank a trio of three-balls for 19 points in the clutch.

A couple of welcome baskets from Kelvin Fitial, Sahj Hossain, Alex Lauron, and Ben Lisua also contributed to the rally.

QQ Rent-A-Car managed to match Ogumoro's effort from behind the arc, but front man Pagarao was held to just 10 points at crunch time.

The team converted three late free throws late in the period, but Ogumoro's final 3-pointer forced the bonus frame.

Both teams had gas left in the tank through the first overtime period frame as the count shifted to 71-all.

QQ Rent-A-Car's Pagarao kept attacking the hoop and started out with 4 points in the second overtime, but had a rough landing after colliding with Hoops' Fitial under the basket and had to take a seat for the rest of the game.

With him out of commission, there was no one to fill the void and Hoops held on strong in the final minute.

Hoops' Ogumoro led all scorers with 31 points, Pagarao finished with 26 on the short end.

Mobil, meanwhile, worked out a slim 34-30 edge at the half on Saturday before running away in the second period. Saturday's game was played under two halves.

They nailed a couple of early 3-pointers out of the gate, one of which came from Dave Sablan who led the group with 11 markers in the period.

Kae Barnardo, John Joyner, and Gyles Ruluked contributed 19 points altogether in support of Sablan.

Team 1 hung around early on, but Mobil's Marvin Rabauliman came off the bench in the latter frame and delivered 14 points, and although Team 1 rang in three treys, they were never able to spark a real comeback.

Mobil's Sablan finished with a game-high 19 points, while Team 1's Preston Basa scrambled for 14 in defeat.
