Saipan pro Mieko Carey posted the shortest time in the longest course in the NUTESE Fundraising Bike Race to lead winners of the weekend event.
Carey, who is preparing for XTERRA Japan scheduled later this month, completed the MTB long course race that started and ended in front of Mariana Resort and brought bikers to FEBC, Suicide Cliff, Bird Island, Grotto, and Banzai Cliff in 44:09. She finished not only first in the women's division, but overall, beating about 20 riders in the category.
The 34-year-old Carey even defeated men's winner Butch Sublemente, who crossed the finish line at the 45:13 mark. John Arceo and Ricky Suba joined Sublemente in the Top 3 after timing in at 47:28 and 48:02, respectively, while Robyn Wondrasek finished second behind Carey after clocking in at 59:30 seconds.
In the MTB short course, which had riders negotiating FEBC, Bird Island, Grotto, and Banzai Cliff before heading back to Mariana Resort, newcomer Glory Bel Tan submitted 50:18 to beat Joann Salazar (52:34) and Mamiko Oshima-Berger (1:09:09).
In the men's division, Nonie Eugenio crossed the finish line more than a minute ahead of Jerome Diyco as the former tallied 40:34 against the latter's 41:48. Ronce Corotan rounded out the Top 3 after recording 42:37.
Meanwhile, last Sunday's event also featured road bike races with Nap Dizon topping the long course contest that had bikers leaving Mariana Resort en route to Banzai Cliff, Suicide Cliff, Bird Island, Grotto and back to Banzai Cliff before returning to the starting point.
Dizon was the lone entry in the road bike division to finish the race under one hour with his 57:48, more than three minutes ahead of runner-up Willy Barbo (1:00:54). Rene Calage joined Dizon and Barbo in the Top 3 after tallying 1:02:56.
In the women's division, Gina Sebial had a cruise control, submitting 1:08:15, about 20 minutes ahead of runner-up Teresa Tenorio-Kim (1:27:00). Esther Ada completed the Top 3 with her 1:32:00.
