The Shottas fought off the Saints' late comeback attempt to pull off a 59-49 win in their U25 division game in the 3rd Docomo Pacific Summer Basketball League last Friday night at the Garapan Basketball Court.
The win was sixth in as many games for Shottas, while GVH clinched its first win in five matches after beating Peacemakers (1-4), 46-38, in last Friday's second game. The second-ranked R-Rebels (4-1), Rollers (2-3), Safety 1st (0-3), and Hi-5 (0-3) make up the rest of the U25 field.
Sahj Hossain paced Shottas in the first half, as he scored 9 markers and lifted his team to a slim 22-19 lead. Hossain and company then hung tough on defense to thwart the Saints' late rally.
The Saints pulled within two baskets in the final two minutes, but missed some good shots in the clutch.
Hossain added a baker's dozen in the closing frame, however he was one upped by teammate Eugene Manglona, who bagged 16 in the second half to finish with a game-high 24 points. The Saints' Joe Basa scrambled for a team-high 9 markers in the defeat.
In the second match, Juan Ogarto led GVH with 8 points in the first half for their close 19-16 advantage at halftime. Ogarto added 8 more in the second frame, 6 of which came late in the game to help secure the win. He received some welcome support from Jojo Ulloa, Juan Iguel, Justo Quitugua, and Dominic Reyes down the homestretch for their 8-point win.
Meanwhile, the season continues at the Garapan court this Thursday with the R-Rebels clashing with Safety 1st at 6pm. Then on Friday, Hi-5 takes on the Saints at 5:30pm, while the Rollers face GVH at 6:30pm.
