Dee Clayton bodybuilding championships set for Sept. 29

Saipan's Dee Clayton is putting together the sophomore episode of the Mariana Islands Bodybuilding Championships on Sept. 29 at the Pedro P. Tenorio Multi-Purpose Center in Susupe.

“The purpose of the event is to promote fitness sports on Saipan and offer such athletes with something to look forward to for sticking to their workout routines,” said Clayton over the phone on Tuesday.

Clayton is a resident of Saipan who began getting involved in fitness competitions back in 1997.

She has won medals in the Pacific Games, Guam's Kontenda Classic, and has appeared in the Sting Ray Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii.

She was turned on to the sport by Saipan Fitness Center's Jim Rice and has since dedicated herself to promoting the sport to the CNMI, especially to women as last year's event was the very first fitness competition on Saipan to feature women's categories.

So far, there are 13 confirmed participants signed up for the contest and registration will remain open until Wednesday, Sept. 19. The entrance fee is set at $25.

Competing categories include Male Bodybuilding's junior, open and master divisions; Male Physique's open and master divisions; as well as the Female Open Body Figure and Open Bikini categories.

The overall male and female champions will be presented with trophies, while medals will be awarded to the Top 3 finishers of each category, except for the Male Physique and Female Bikini categories, which will recognize the Top 5 placers.

Last year, Juan Santiago and Yumiko Kawahara were hailed as the overall male and female champions. Santiago also took first prize in the Male Bodybuilder (middleweight) grouping.

Other winners included Bikini and Female Figure (tall) winner Jamriang Frieden; Male Physique winner Raymond Santos; and Male Bodybuilder (lightweight) winner Gayan Perera.

Gold's Gym, Megabyte, IP&E-Shell, Subway, Power 99, Hyatt Regency Saipan, Rozell Printing, Island Prints, and Island Rebel are sponsoring the event.

Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased for $15 at Gold's Gym, Megabyte, or at the front door on the night of the event.

Terms and conditions are subject to change without notice; the show starts at 7pm.
