Carol McKenzie and Robert Talavera moved out of slump after winning the Saipan Bowling Association-Budweiser King and Queen of the Lanes' September roll-offs held over the weekend at the Capitol Bowling Center.
McKenzie took her first monthly crown after collecting 672 pinfalls in last Sunday's roll-off. She also bowled last Saturday, but her 608 pinfalls were only good enough for third place after Day 1 of the tournament. Bowlers are allowed to compete for two days, but only the higher score is counted.
When McKenzie returned for Day 2, she got off to a good start, posting 181 pinfalls. She then averaged in the 160s in the last three games (159, 161, and 168) for the 13-pinfall win over Day 1 leader and eventual runner-up Diane Chong, who earned 659 pinfalls (136, 166, 181, and 176).
Completing the Top 3 was Tess Fabie, who totaled 639 pinfalls (154, 144, 179, and 162) last Saturday-one pinfall ahead of her Sunday total. Other female keglers who joined the weekend event were Gloria Omechelang (617), Myrna Santos (549), Marie Candado (545), and Gigi Zapanta (501).
In the men's division, Talavera also ended his losing skid after tallying 806 pinfalls (164, 223, 183, and 236) in Day 1 of the September roll-offs.
Talavera, which last won the monthly tournament in January this year, was the lone bowler to score at least 800 pinfalls to foil Raymond Angeles' bid for back-to-back victories. The August winner Angeles, who had 678 in Day 1, tried again to surpass Talavera's record, but got only 791 pinfalls (190, 144, 240, and 217) in Day 2 to settle for second place.
Talavera also bowled last Sunday and logged the third best score (780) in the field, but since he had already won first place, the third spot went to Percy Omechelang (772 pinfalls).
Edward Baluyan came in at fourth with his 763 pinfalls, followed by Rusty Musca (737), Jae Yong Kim (733), Ronald Batac (732), Simon Manacop (719), Joe Sto. Domingo (719), Jorge Soledad (703), Raphael Zapanta (691), Benjie Cruz (681), Yong Won Lee (666), Bernard Paraiso (649), Jerry Kaneshi (624), Raul Dumapit (600), Tony Yarobwemal (583), and Ben Aizon (542).
In the Fiji Water Prince of the Lanes, John Taisacan made it two in a row after totaling 698 pinfalls. He won over Ryan Batac (646), rival M.J. Aldan (567), Marion McKenzie (544), Angel Iglecias (476), and Marcel McKenzie (354).
