Tudela, Sablan top Amigo October, November tourneys

Amigo Golf Club’s Joe Tudela and Frank Sablan each received ace of the month honors after the conclusion of the group’s recent October and November tournaments held at the Kingfisher Golf Links in Talafofo.

Tudela came from behind to seize the October plum, while Sablan walked the line to win November’s berth into the association’s season finale Ace of Aces Tournament slated in late December.

The couple joins January Ace’s Joe Sablan Jr., February’s Doll Yamagishi, March’s Ben Jones Sr., April’s Ben Jones Jr., May’s Lorraine Babauta, June’s Terry Guerrero, July’s Felix Sasamoto, August’s Diding Hocog, and Septmeber’s Sherlyn Jones.

Only six competitors turned out in Oct. 7’s qualifying round, of which just three were actually vying for an ace title.

The weather conditions added an extra challenge for the trio, where in the end, Tudela finished in between rival contenders Frank Guerrero and John Guerrero with a gross score of 86 that was adjusted into a 73.

Frank Guerrero finished with an 88 raw card that was trimmed down to a 71 net total, while John Guerrero matched Tudela’s gross-mark of 86, but settled for a net tally of 75.

Then in Oct. 21’s final round, John Guerrero was unable to attend and thus Tudela and Frank Guerrero battled it out in a head-to-head duel with six past aces coming along for the ride.

Tudela improved his initial score by a handful in the clutch and jotted down an 81 gross total that factored into a 68 net count for a combined net-total of 141, while Frank Guerrero was in a funk from the start, and despite a hefty handicap of 17, came up way short. He ended up with a 95 raw score that left him with a combined net total of 149.

November’s affair also featured three aspiring ace qualifiers.

The qualifying round back on Nov. 4 resulted in Frank Sablan taking an early lead with an 80 gross score that was shaved down to a 72 net total.

Just three strokes behind him came John Guerrero who recorded an 86 raw tally that was cut down to a 75 net total, while Frank Guerrero penciled in a 95 gross card that was adjusted into a 77 net score.

It was still anybody’s game heading into the Nov. 11 final round, but Sablan had ice in his veins under the hot blistering sun and put on an impressive display of consistency to hold off the opposition.

Considering the conditions, Sablan finished with a respectable gross score of 89 for a net total of 81 and a combined net sum of 143 and outshone the competition by four strokes.

John Guerrero gave his all, but fell short yet again, and settled for an 83 raw total, and 72 net figure, for a combined net total of 147.

Third placer Frank Guerrero end up with an even 90 gross mark that was melted down to a 72 net result for a combined net tally of 149; 10 players made up November’s qualifying field and eight turned out for the final round.

The December ace qualifier commences this Sunday with the final round scheduled for Nov. 25. Both events will be held at Kingfisher Golf Links.

Show time for both events is set for 11am with a noon tee off.

The Ace of Aces winner will be awarded a hefty cash prize in addition to overall bragging rights for the year. They also get to have their name inscribed on the club’s perpetual trophy, which they can keep until it is handed off to next season’s winner.

As a reminder to all members, and especially ace qualifiers, full payment of the club’s membership dues is required prior to the start of the Ace of Aces tournament in order to be eligible to compete. Failure to pay the fees will also disqualify players from claiming prizes at the awards banquet.
