Cool Kids Only takes first finals berth

Rachel Abrams, seen here going for a shot in Kanoa’s women’s caging, played for Cool Kids Only, which advanced to the finals of the 3-on-3 tournament after winning over Ball So Hard last Monday at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium. (Rosely B. Monroyo) Cool Kids Only secured the first finals seat in the 2012 Kanoa Resort 3-on-3 Co-ed Basketball Tournament after slipping past Ball So Hard in the winner’s bracket semifinals, 28-26, last Monday at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium.

Five straight points from Lalaine Pagarao in the homestretch brought Cool Kids Only to the championship game and dropped Ball So Hard to the loser’s bracket. Ball So Hard was then forced to duel Posse for the second finals ticket last night and the winner of the rubber match must beat Cool Kids Only twice in today’s championship round to steal the title. Game 1 of the finals is set for 6pm, while Game 2, in necessary, will be played at 6:30pm.

Cool Kids Only and Ball So Hard arranged a semis showdown after sweeping their first two games. The battle of two undefeated squads then remained close after the first period with Cool Kids Only holding a shaking 12-10 advantage. Madeleine Alegre knocked 8 of her 10 markers in the first 10 minutes of play to put Cool Kids Only in the driver’s seat, while Kaylani Lebria scored 8 to keep Ball So Hard in the thick of the fight.

The nip-and-tuck game continued in the second half and Pagarao went on to deliver the clutch baskets for Cool Kids Only, as she made a layup and a triple in the closing minutes of the match.

Pagarao top-scored for Cool Kids Only with her 11 points, while Lebria paced Ball So Hard with a game-high 16 markers.

In the loser’s bracket playoff played also last Monday, Posse kept its bid for a finals slot after downing Tappers, 34-24.

After missing the first half of the knockout match, Jimmy came out smoking in the second, connecting on four triples and scoring 16 points to lift Posse to the 10-point win.

Dyenina Diaz added 8, nailing all her production in the first half to keep Posse afloat. Actually, Posse even took the lead despite the absence of Tudela, as Coquina Teregeyo ended the first half with back-to-back treys for their 14-12 cushion.

Tudela then opened the second half with a triple and Tappers failed to answer, as the latter’s baskets came sporadically, while the Posse big man was on a zone from downtown. Tudela fired 12 straight markers at one point in the second half and made eight of Posse’s 10 field goals in that frame to eliminate Tappers.
