Back-to-back for SBC

Saipan Badminton Club’s Oh Im Bog receives a serve during his and Alma Ortega’s mixed doubles B game against the Golden Racquets’ Jordan Pangelinan and Jen Savellano in the finals of the Traders Insurance badminton tournament last Saturday at the TSL Sports Complex. (Roselyn B. Monroyo) Saipan Badminton Club continued its dominance in the Traders Insurance Badminton Team Tournament after routing the Golden Racquets, 9-1, in the finale of the 2012 edition of the annual event over the weekend at the TSL Sports Complex.

After being undefeated in the round-robin elimination, SBC nearly swept the Golden Racquets in the finals to claim back-to-back championships in the team competition. The two-time champion won last year’s event against the Berks Blazers, also in a lopsided fashion, 11-0

Sam Jones and Glenn Bluutjens started SBC’s title defense bid with a 23-21, 21-21 victory over Edwin Maratas and Noli Santos in the men’s doubles A last Friday. SBC went on to win three of the last four matches in the first day of the championship duel to gain momentum going into last Saturday’s finale.

Oh Im Bog and Jexler Caranto gave SBC its second win in Day 1 of the finals after thumping Roger Vales and Vic Regis in the men’s doubles B, 21-11, 21-6. Kanata Omori and Jordan Pangelinan then ended the Golden Racquets’ two-game losing skid after sweeping Joel Ortega and Son Jae Ok in the men’s doubles C, 21-18, 21-18.

Alma Ortega and Diane Francisco then brought SBC back on track with a 21-9, 21-10 triumph over Janelle Pangelinan and Jen Savellano in the women’s doubles C. SBC also had the last say in Day 1 with Joel Ortega and Caranto topping Omori and Jordan Pangelinan in the men’s doubles BC, 21-10, 21-15.

With its 4-1 lead after the first half of the finals, SBC needed only two wins in the last five matches to prevail in the championship showdown and wrapped up the series early with the pairs of Hannah Choi and Caranto and Oh and Julie Lee delivering the title-clinching victories.

Choi and Caranto played in the first game last Saturday and made short work of Santos and Cheng Saturno in the mixed doubles A, 21-15, 21-14, to move one win away from securing the championship.

Then in the second game, SBC celebrated, as Oh and Lee survived the father-and- daughter tandem of Jojo and Jen Savellano in a three-game mixed doubles BC pairing, 21-23, 21-6, 21-17.

Despite taking the championship early, SBC still went for the kill, winning the three remaining games to complete the Day 2 sweep.

Choi played her second game and teamed up with Mario Diola in defeating Anna Omori and Santos in the mixed doubles A, 21-6, 21-16. SBC’s fourth win of the day came from Oh and Ortega, who slipped past Jordan Pangelinan and Jen Savellano in the mixed doubles B, 18-21, 21-19, 21-18. Lee and Choi capped the SBC sweep after thwarting Anna Alvarez and Saturno in two games (official scores were unavailable) in the women’s doubles AB.

Meanwhile, in the battle for third place, the Berks Blazers edged Shirley’s/Colgate Badminton Club, 6-4.
