Aquiningoc sets club net record

Alex Aquiningoc, shown here in a file photo, reset the Refaluwasch Golf Association record for lowest net score after firing a 59 last Saturday during the club's September Ace of the Month Tournament at the Kingfisher Golf Links. (Photo by Shan Seman) Alex Aquiningoc reset the Refaluwasch Golf Association record for lowest net score after taming the greens and fairways of the Kingfisher Golf Links last Saturday during the club's September Ace of the Month Tournament.

The businessman was feeling it all afternoon, as he obviously got a lift playing alongside the likes of national players Jess Wabol and Joe “Kamikaze” Camacho.

With the wind on his back and thunder in his swing, eagle-eye Aquiningoc obliterated Pete Pua's six-year record of 61 by carding a sterling 59 at the Talafofo golf course.

Aquiningoc started slow and was “only” able to register a two-over 38 in the front nine. He, however, found his stroke in the back nine, hitting his marks and putting well for an incredible two-under 34 that gave him even par for the round.

The last nine holes of Aquiningoc's near-perfect round was highlighted by an eagle in the 11th hole, which saw his drive come within 12 feet of the cup.

His 72 gross minus his 13 handicap gave him the all-time best round with handicap in RGA history.

The 59 net notwithstanding, Aquiningoc still wasn't declared the winner of the monthly tee-off, as RGA rules disqualify current monthly champions from repeating during the year.

Ben Duenas therefore was named September Ace after improving on the net 71 he fired during the September qualifier last Aug. 20 at Kingfisher by shooting a phenomenal net 63 last Saturday, while also playing in the same group as Aquiningoc, Wabol, and Camacho.

Ed “Doi” Tenorio and junior golfer Ryan Kim finished tied at third place after both registered net scores of 66. Tenorio, however, edged Kim on the front nine scorecard, 32.5-34, to finish third with Kim taking fourth place.

With their exceptional performance on a bright and sunny Saturday at Kingfisher, Aquiningoc took home $100, Duenas $80, Tenorio $70, and Kim $60.

In the closest to the pin competition, winners were Duenas in the 6th hole and Tony Satur in the 12th hole. Both won $40 for their long drives.

A record number of 19 players participated in the September Ace and the rest of the field, with their net scores in parenthesis, were as follows: Mario Taitano (67); Tony Satur (68); Gus Camacho (69); Joe “Kamikaze” Camacho (70); Adam Hardwicke (71); Carlos Salas (71); Jess Wabol (72); Louie Tilipao (74); Jordan Kossam (74); Norman Tenorio (74); Charlie Joe (76); Chang Kim (76); Joe Wabol (79); John Mettao (80); and Ed Kapileo (82).
