Student-athletes put on a show

Kadmiel Rey returns to Whispering Palms during their game in the 2009-2010 Coalition of Private Schools on Saipan Volleyball League last week at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium. (Roselyn B. Monroyo) Student-athletes gathered last week for the playoff round of the 2009-2010 Coalition of Private Schools on Saipan Volleyball League and played several exciting games to bring life to the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium in four lazy afternoons.

The playoffs started last Monday with three matches: Marianas Baptist Academy vs. Calvary Christian Academy; Mt. Carmel School vs. Saipan Community School, and Seventh Day Adventist vs. Saipan International School-Blue.

MBA and MCS swept their respective foes to advance to the semifinals, while SDA topped SIS-Blue to earn the right to face erstwhile champion Whispering Palms in the next round.

Whispering Palms drew a bye in the first round after ruling the regular season with its 15-1 record. The Navy Hill-based school went on to move into the next round after thwarting SDA and later faced Grace Christian Academy in the semifinals.

The semifinal round was played on Thursday with MCS sweeping MBA in the first semis match, 25-18, 25-23. The second Final Four tiff was a more exciting game with the GCA Eagles setting an old score and dethroning Whispering Palms via a hard-earned win in three sets, 10-25, 25-23, 15-7.

A fitting finale was set for Friday and again, GCA escaped with a three set triumph to claim the championship that eluded them last season.

The Ada gym was busy last week, as the 2009 Saipan Rotary Club Youth Basketball League played make-up games at night after the indoor volleyball action from the private school league.

The G-Stars won two games last week to remain unbeaten in the youth caging. The G-Stars first routed Hi-5, 64-34, and then edged the Sonics, 47-46.

In other results, the Chalan Kanoa Saints downed the Celtics, 60-38, on Tuesday before bowing to 670 Rollers II on Thursday, 45-55. Thursday action had Rollers Basketball Club sweeping their games, as Young 670 Rollers also prevailed against Hi-5, 47-43.

Duplicating the G-Stars' two victories in a week was 670 Rollers II, which slipped past the Runnin' Rebels,' 45-44. The Sixers were the other team to win last week, whipping Young 670 Rollers, 69-54.

With the Rotary caging making up for lost time after suspending the league for more than three weeks, the IT&E Inter-Government/Business Basketball League took a weeklong break and will resume action this week.

While student-athletes were putting up a show in basketball and indoor volleyball leagues here last week, Marianas High School's Ji Hoon Heo was in Korea for the 2009 Asian/Oceania Closed Championships.

The tournament in Jeju-do was Heo's biggest so far, but unfortunately he lost both his singles and doubles matches in the first round.

Joining Heo in Korea was CNMI coach Jeff Race and Pacific Oceania teammates Steffi Carruthers of Samoa and Abigail Tere-Apisah of Papua New Guinea.

Back in local action, Tsunami Swimming Center Saipan and American Red Cross held the first session of their five-part swim clinic at the Kan Pacific Swimming Pool in Marpi.

The Halloween-themed initial session drew 58 individuals.

The week ended with NMASA selecting paddler Richard Sikkel as the male athlete of the month (October) for leading Saipan Outrigger Canoe Club to the overall championship in the 11th Micronesian Cup outrigger canoe competition last month.
