Title belt at stake in 'Confrontation'

UFC finalist Philippe “The Filipino Assasin” Nover, center, poses with Gorilla Warfare MMA “Confrontation” fighters Jon Tuck of Guam and Saipan's Myron San Nicolas during an autograph signing at the Borderline store in Joeten Shopping Centre in Susupe yesterday. (Roselyn B. Monroyo) Gorilla Warfare MMA will make a first this Saturday when it hosts “Confrontation” where a title belt is at stake.

“It has not been done before and we are excited to be the first,” said Gorilla Warfare MMA's Jeff Boyer, who was referring to having a title belt at stake in one of the 13 bouts that will take place at World Resort tomorrow.

On top on these anticipated fights is the duel between the Philippines' Eduard “The Landslide” Folayang and Guam's Jon “Super Saiyan” Tuck for the lightweight title belt.

Both fighters are undefeated with Folayang holding a 6-0 record against Tuck's 4-0.

“Having a title belt challenge is evidence of our commitment to always raise the bar in mixed martial arts competitions. We seek to deliver the best show and the best spectator experience to our fans,” Boyer added.

Besides the Folayang-Tuck fight, other featured bouts are Nate “The Terrible” Flores vs. Maitai “The Charger” Charley; Charles “The Predator” Aiken vs. Myron “The Natural” San Nicolas (heavyweight); and Kelvin “The Big Hit” Fitial vs. Mike “Ogre” Davis (heavyweight).

“Winners of our heavyweight match-ups will meet again for the heavyweight title in our next event,” Boyer said.

There is another four-man competition for the middleweight title among Syl Teregeyo, Donnie Fejeran, Pete Guerrero and Keli Manglona. Teregeyo and Fejeran will duel tomorrow with the winner facing the victor of the Guerrero-Manglona bout in the next event.

“From then on, the match-ups will be one-on-one in defense of the belt. We did it this way to really bring out the most deserving winner,” Boyer added.

Besides the title bouts, another interesting feature in “Confrontation” is Ultimate Fighter Season 8 Finalist Philippe “The Filipino Assasin” Nover, who will referee one bout tomorrow.

Nover, who is based in Brooklyn, New York, was at the Borderline store in Joeten Shopping Centre in Susupe yesterday for autograph signing with MMA fans and fellow fighters. He arrived on Saipan on Wednesday morning and is honored to be part of the growing sport of MMA on the island.

“To all the fighters, good luck. Give your best in every round and I am sure all the sacrifices and efforts you put into training for this event will be rewarded come fight night,” he said. “I am looking forward to exciting MMA action on Saipan.”
