12 keglers off to Asian Intercity in Guam

The Saipan Bowling Association will be sending a 12-player delegation to represent the CNMI in the 23rd Asian Intercity Bowling Championships set from Nov. 21 to 27 at the Central Lanes in Tamuning, Guam.

The CNMI delegation will comprise two teams-Team Saipan and Team Capital Hill-and spearheaded by SBA president Jerry Tan and team manager Ross Zapanta.

Team Saipan will have both a men's team and a women's team. Making up the men's team are veteran keglers Alex Castro, Kitz Barja, Percy Omechalang, and Simon Manacop.

The women's team of Team Saipan will have Emi Williams, Diane Camacho, Gloria Omechalang, and Elsa “Gigi” Zapanta.

The CNMI's top junior bowler Raphael Zapanta, meanwhile, will join former youth bowlers Raymond Zapanta, Raymond Angeles, and Jared Gutierrez in Team Capital Hill.

The bowlers will initially be participating in three events-Singles, Doubles, and Team. The total scores in the three events will be used to determine the All-Events winners. The Top 16 male and female bowlers in the All-Events will then qualify for the two-day Masters Event. Gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded for each of the five events.

The Asian Intercity Bowling Championships is an annual event with participants from member and guest cities from Asia and the Marianas like the CNMI, Guam, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, and Taiwan.

There were years when cities from Australia, New Zealand and India also participated. In 2007, the tournament was held in Macau, China. The tournament is officially sanctioned by the International Bowling Federation and the World Tenpin Bowling Association, the world-wide governing bodies of tenpin bowling.

SBA would like to extend its thanks Tan Siu Lin Foundation and IT&E for their support to the delegation. The former donated $1,000 in cash, while the latter gave $300, T-shirts, and phone cards to the delegation.

SBA president Jerry Tan also thanked the individual bowlers for participating in the 23rd Asian Intercity Bowling Championships this weekend and paying part of the tournament expenses.
