The Inaugural Tan Holdings Tennis Classic capped its first weekend of competition on Sunday, crowning 13 champions in the singles and doubles events.
Leading the champions' list is tournament director Kirk Schuler, who needed an extra point in the second set to slip past CNMI coach Jeff Race in the men's open singles finals, 6-1, 7-5, yesterday at the American Memorial Park tennis courts. Peter Loyola survived junior player Benjie Decena in three sets, 7-6 (6-3), 6-2, 6-1, to save third place.
Other championship matches played at either AMP or Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan tennis courts had Mikayla Lopez, Thea Minor, Carrie Schuler, Isabel Heras, Lee Dong Min, Lydia Tan, Lee Eun Kuoung, Rai Raj, Daniel Wollack, Geesyu and Eunsya Hahn on the winning side. Preliminary games were played at the Hyatt Regency Saipan and Pacific Islands Club tennis courts.
Older Geesyu outclassed younger brother Eunsya in the boys' 10-and-under singles finals, 6-3, while Heras took the girls' 10-and-under tiara after downing Anna Calvert in the championship match, 6-1.
The Hahn brothers teamed up in the 10-and-under doubles event and prevailed over Mimi Sakano and Julie Kim, 6-2, to claim the championship trophy.
In the adults singles, Lee Dong Min outlasted Guam's Lai Sam in the finals, 6-2, 6-2, to clinch the men's 40-and-above title.
In the women's 40-and-above, Lydia Tan ruled the round-robin tournament after edging Cleofe Santos in three sets, 6-7, 6-0, 7-5, and winning via walkover against Sally Lee.
The women's 4.0 singles also had a round-robin format with Lee Eun Kyoung beating Theecel Minor, 6-4, 6-4, and Dina Jones, 6-3, 6-2. Jones settled for third after downing Theecel Minor, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3.
Theecel's younger sister, Thea, secured the women's open title after crushing Laila Mailman, 6-2, 6-2.
Another junior player, Lopez, won a championship trophy on Sunday after pulling off a 5-7, 7-6, 6-1 triumph over Lyn Liang in the women's 3.0 singles finals.
Carrie Schuler duplicated her husband's feat when she ruled the women's 2.0 singles, prevailing over Anne Song, 6-4, 6-1, and Maya Lee (walkover) in the round-robin event.
In the men's 4.0 singles finals, Raj needed only two sets to thwart Buddy Garote, 6-2, 6-3.
The second week of the two-weekend Inaugural Tan Holdings Tennis Classic will continue this Wednesday with competitions in juniors long course and adult doubles.
Around 40 players from Guam will participate in the second week of the netfest, which is being supported by Gatorade, Quality Distributors, TakeCare, Mobil, Tan Siu Lin Foundation, AON, Shirley's Coffee Shop, IT&E, Continental Airlines, Hertz, Docomo Pacific, First Hawaiian Bank, Deloitte, Miller Lite, Pepsi, and AMS Typhoon Shutters.
