'Confrontation' a treat for local MMA fans

Marianas Elite's Maitai “The Charger” Charley chokes Predators' Nate “The Terrible” Flores during their bout in Gorilla Warfare MMA's “Confrontation” held at the Saipan World Resort on Saturday. (Roselyn B. Monroyo) Quick, scary, and action-filled bouts marked Gorilla Warfare MMA's “Confrontation” staged at the Royal Taga Hall of the Saipan World Resort.

Ten of the 11 fights featured on Saturday night were decided in the first round, one left spectators up on their feet praying for an unconscious fighter to stand up, and nine had combatants engaged in exchanges of flurry of punches and tricky grapping skills.

The confrontation between Guam's Jon “Super Saiyan” Tuck and the Philippines' Eduard “The Landslide” Folayang gave spectators the quickest and scariest bout of the evening.

Tuck scored a knockout win over Folayang in the eight-minute mark of the first round, slamming the Filipino fighter down to the canvas. Folayang had a bad fall with his head hitting the floor hard. Tuck then followed it out with a couple of punches to Folayang's face before referee Tony D'Angelo stepped in and stopped the fight.

After the fall and beating, Folayang was left unconscious for several minutes even after D'Angelo removed his mouthpiece to facilitate easy breathing. Medics and a ring doctor attended to Folayang, who fortunately regained his consciousness after more than 10 minutes.

When he sat on his corner, Folayang was still clueless on what happened a few minutes ago. His cornerman explained the unfortunate incident and Folayang went on to congratulate Tuck, who handed the Filipino fighter his first loss in seven fights. Tuck improved to a 5-0 record, following his stunning win over Folayang.

Besides Tuck, other fighters recording victories in the first round were Syl “The Deal” Teregeyo, Keli Manglona, Tabby “Jay” Muna, Lionel Borja, Derrick Augenbaugh, Kelvin “The Big Hit” Fitial, and Charles “The Predator” Aiken.

The bout between Nate “The Terrible” Flores and Maitai “The Charger” Charley was the lone fight in the night that did not end in the first round. However, it was one of the most exciting shows in “Confrontation.”

Flores was hit by a low blow in the first round, but recovered and punished Charley with punches on the head and the body. Charley also had his moment in the latter portion of the first round when he caught Flores in the corner and hit him with body shots. In the opening minutes of the second round, it was Flores' turn to pin down Charley, who pulled the plug after getting hit by a barrage of punches from his tormentor.

The first title belt (middleweight) bout between Manglona and Teregeyo was also a good show, as both fighters exchanged punches and kicks before the former gained the upperhand, pinning the latter to the ground to score a victory via tap-out.

The only downturn in the much-anticipated “Confrontation” was the heavyweight clash between Mike “Ogre” Davis and Fitial. The fight ended after only 13 seconds in the first round with neither fighter throwing a solid punch. Fitial won when he pinned down Davis and put up a rear-naked choke tactic to win via submission.
