Gov. Benigno R. Fitial bid farewell yesterday to Medardo G. Macaraig, the Philippine Consul General to Saipan, a post he has held since July 26, 2009. Macaraig will be leaving Saipan on Oct. 15 to begin his new assignment as Minister and Consul General of the Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Fitial expressed his appreciation to the consul general for his friendship and services to the Filipino community over the past three years.
"This is a sad day that I hoped would not have come," lamented Fitial. "But I understand that you must respond to the call of duty and to the decisions of the national government."
The governor also thanked Macaraig for exercising his diplomatic abilities and effectively communicating with the Filipino community in urging them to be responsible and kind friends of the Commonwealth. He also assured the consul general that the long historic ties of the people of the CNMI and the Philippines will not end because of the closure of the consulate. Rather, the governor stated that these treasured ties will live on in the years to come.
As Macaraig prepares to leave the island, Fitial is asking the people of the people of the Commonwealth to continue praying for the consul general’s wife, who is still undergoing medical treatment in the Philippines.
"Let us keep her and the Macaraig family in our thoughts and prayers so that she may soon recover and enjoy the comfort of being home with her husband and family," added Fitial. (Office of the Governor)
