EMO warns of high surf until Friday
The CNMI Emergency Management Office is strongly advising the public to avoid venturing near exposed reefs and beaches in the next couple of days due to life-threatening rip currents. In a high surf advisory issued late afternoon yesterday, EMO said that a large west swell will cause hazardous surf along west facing reefs. A west swell will cause combined seas of 7 to 8 feet tonight to build to 8 to 10 feet by Friday. “Therefore, Gov. Benigno R. Fitial is advising the general public especially beachgoers, fishermen, tourists, swimmers, divers, and surfers to exercise caution along exposed reefs and beaches,” part of the EMO advisory read. EMO said that isolated thunderstorms will continue through Friday night with southwest winds persisting through the weekend. It added that the hazardous surf may continue into the coming weekend.
