(Contribute Photo) NTT Docomo Hustlers and Team Pirates won the mini tournament within the Saipan Billiards Association's Open 8-Ball League after beating their respective opponents in the championship round played Tuesday night.

The Hustlers clinched the Budweiser Cup championship in the Agingan division but only after nipping an upset-conscious Huwa Team, 4-3, at The Pirates Bar.

Senen Pangilinan and Erwin Gomez gave the Utopia Bar-sponsored team an early 1-0 lead after beating Joey Cruz and Randy Sablan in the first doubles match.

Ray and Tero Takai quickly equalized for Huwa after skunking Jerry Soriano and Boyet Sequioco in the second doubles match.

Soriano immediately redeemed himself from the surprise loss in the doubles by taking out Ray Basa in straight games in the first of five singles matches.

Gomez then made it 3-1 with a win over Sablan. But Huwa quickly won the next two singles games with Cruz triumphing over Joemer Enriquez and Ray Takai shocking Pangilinan.

With the championship on the line, Tero Takai gave Hustlers some nervous moments when he defeated Rowell Mariano in the first game before the latter rallied by taking the last two for the finals win.

Other members of the victorious Hustlers team are Joey Lucido and Robert Sanciangco.

In the Obyan division, Team Pirates raised their own Budweiser Cup championship after a 4-2 victory over USSP Fotten Palau at the USS Peleliu Club.

The two teams split the first two doubles matches before Juan Camacho gave Team Pirates a 2-1 lead in the first singles match. R.E. Rengiil tied things up when he beat Rodney Aldan before Edward Suzuki and Bert Rufugui closed out the finals for Team Pirates with victories in the last two singles matches.

Dave Maratita, Patrick Cepeda, James Reyes, and Jack Cepeda make up the rest of the players for Team Pirates.

The Hustlers and Team Pirates will be feted, along with champions of the Saipan Billiards Association's Open 8-Ball League, during an awards banquet on Aug. 8 at the Charley's Cabaret of the Pacific Islands Club. (Saipan Tribune)
