The U.S. government is over $13 trillion in debt. That’s trillion, with a capital T! They are in the same situation we are in! They will soon be forced to face the same financial decisions we face today. Instead of becoming part of the bigger problem by squandering millions of CNMI dollars in a Social Security buy in, let’s show the world what the CNMI is really made of and make the cuts in government necessary to honor the law that has told all the retirees they will get what they have earned.
It is childish and irresponsible to not address our government’s spending problem (not a revenue problem) by generalizing and simply cutting everyone. The person who has worked for the CNMI government for only a few years does not have the vested interest of the retiree who followed the rules for 20 years or more! The law allows for reductions in force and other means to trim government. The law does not allow the reduction or outright theft of retirement pensions!
I have already earned my Social Security pension by working in the U.S. before, during, and after college and will receive it when I turn 62. I am not alone in this in the CNMI. To buy into Social Security is simply stealing my CNMI retirement. Nobody buys something they already have! But in the bigger picture, it is not wise to buy into a bigger debt structure that will soon be facing cuts and reductions due to the same mismanagement we have experienced.
Let’s show the world who we really are. Let’s honor the retirement system we created by law. Let’s make the cuts the law allows and show the U.S. how to do it right. They are watching because they are next! We might want to watch who among our politicians support this and act accordingly in November.
