(Contributed Photo) Northern Marianas Badminton Association participated in the GNBF Summer Friendship Tournament in Guam over the weekend and went home with three championships.

Handing NMBA victories in the Guam National Badminton Federation-organized tournament held at the St. Paul Christian School in Yigo were Chris Hilario, Oh Im Bog, Chris Obaldo, and Toshiko Obata

Hilaro and Oh were entered in the Level 2 men's doubles and survived Guam's John Conducto and Cloyd Rosas in a three-game finale. The NMBA pair dropped the opening game, 16-21, but swept the last two, 21-15, 11-9, to steal the championship.

Obaldo and Obata also played in Level 2 and defeated fellow NMBA bets Gigi Zapanta and Christy Villaflor in the women's doubles finals, 21-13, 21-19.

Then in the mixed doubles Level 2, Obata teamed up with Oh and the duo prevailed against fellow NMBA players Hilario and Obaldo and Luis Camacho and Merlie Tolentino.

NMBA had 17 delegates to the weekend tournament and 14 of them joined the Level 2 and 3 singles and doubles competitions, which also featured players from the Philippines. The PH contingent had six players and four officials, while host Guam fielded more than 20 players in the two-day event.

It was the first time that GNBF had a three-nation tournament and the host aims to hold the event annually.

Meanwhile, NMBA would like to thank GNBF and organizers of the weekend competition for inviting Saipan players. NMBA also donated shuttlecocks and presented a plaque of appreciation to the host.

“We received many positive comments from Guam badminton and they greatly appreciate the effort, involvement, and dedication we gave to this event. GNBF is looking forward to playing with us again next year,” NMBA said in a press statement.
