Independent bet Illuminada “Lumi” Bermudes formally made known her intention to seek a Senate seat after she filed Wednesday her petition for candidacy at the Commonwealth Election Commission.
Bermudes' decision has the full backing of her family and supporters who accompanied her in filing the requirements.
She will be running against three other contenders in the 2012 mid-term elections, including Ana Teregeyo, Ray Anthony Yumul, and incumbent Sen. Luis Crisostimo (R-Saipan).
Bermudes has been with the Public School System for more than 10 years. She now serves the system as its program manager for the Chamorro Carolinian Language Heritage Studies program. Prior to this appointment, she was also a teacher and a school administrator for many years.
“I know I can make a difference [for our people]. With the way everything is going on right now, I want to make sure that our people are represented,” she said after filing Wednesday noon.
If elected, Bermudes vowed to craft and introduce legislation that will help generate revenues and create employment. Banking on the people's vote of confidence, she said this will happen for the people.
For Bermudes, the Commonwealth has its own unique beauty that it can effectively promote to other places. “We have something to offer and we need to show them to the outside world,” she said.
For the first-time senatorial aspirant, her sincere motive to serve for the best interest of the people is what set her apart from other politicians.
In an earlier interview with Bermudes, she cited that education and economy will be among the priorities of her campaign. She may not have all the answers to questions, but she assured that she will work with and listen to everyone who wants to be part of the solution.
