SSHS sets important dates for start of school year

Saipan Southern High School will hold its first day of classes for school year 2012-2013 on Sep. 4, 2012.

Students must be on campus by 8am. Classes starts at 8:30am and dismissal is at 3pm. All new students enrolling at SSHS for school year 2012-2013 must complete and submit a registration form.

Registration forms are available in the registrar's office or main office. All returning students who attended SSHS last year must return all textbooks and settle all obligations with the school, before you can pick up your class reschedule.

Schedules are to be picked up at the Counseling office are as follows:

-12th grade: Aug. 22, 2012 9am-4pm

-11th grade: Aug. 23 9am-4pm,

-10th grade Aug. 24 9am-4pm.

All transfer and new students enrolling at SSHS SY2012-2013 in grades 10,11, and 12 are required to attend an orientation on Aug. 28 from 1pm to 3pm with their parents or legal guardians.

No students will be allowed to attend the orientation without parents or legal guardians in attendance. Incoming freshman students orientation will be held on two different session to accommodate parents or legal guardians work schedules. Both sessions are on Aug. 28 from 9am to 11am and 1pm to 3pm.

GTC important school events/dates:

-Parent orientation: There will be a parent orientation for new and returning parents to communicate changes and expectations for SY 2012-13. Orientation will be on Friday, Aug. 17, 2012 at 5pm (approximately an hour). School supply listing and free meal application will be available.

-Kindergarten Reading First Assessment (RFA) Screening Test: All in-coming kindergarten students will be tested with the RFA by his/her kindergarten teacher. The screening test is approximately 15-20 minutes. Scheduled testing time and date have been made with parents. Please do not miss your scheduled testing date. For your date and time, you may call, 237-3121 and ask for Ms. Angie. RFA testing days are Aug. 20-22, 2012 between 8:30am and 11:30am.

-Kindergarten orientation: There will be an orientation for all kindergarten parents and students. This is an opportunity for you and your child to meet your child's kinder teacher and answer any questions you may have. Expectations about home-school partnership will also be shared. Kinder orientation is on Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012 beginning at 5pm to 6pm.

-First Day of School: Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012. Classes start promptly at 8am and ends at 2pm.

-Back to School Open House: Friday, Sept. 7, 2012 at 5pm. We will convene in the cafeteria and then disperse into your child's classroom.

-School Supply List for Kindergarten to 6th Grade: Is available at National Office Supply and Modern Stationery. (PR)

UOG course: Changing trends in the hospitality industry

Registration is open for Changing Trends in the Hospitality Industry, level 1. Taught by UOG Professor Fred Schumann, this 15 contact hour course can be used to satisfy training requirements for those businesses that hold Qualifying Certificates. This online course is designed for tourism industry employees who seek advancement to the supervisory or management level and runs Aug. 27-31, 2012. The cost is $180. Saipan's biggest party set

The NMI chapter of the American Red Cross announces the 24th annual Club 200 “Way Out West”, their biggest fundraiser of the year, will be held on Oct. 6 from 5pm to 10pm at the Fiesta Resort and Spa.

For the first time, the theme is western-based with a live country western band G-GAP coming from Tokyo to perform. Western attire is desired but not mandatory. Country line dancing is encouraged.

As always, there are a ton of raffle prizes, including a $15,000 grand prize. Tickets cost $100 each which includes entry into the raffle plus an all-you-can eat and drink buffet.

The event attracts more than a thousand partiers each year. Proceeds go to the non-profit American Red Cross.

Marianas Made set to open

Marianas Made, a new consignment store specializing in locally made art and crafts as well as packaged specialty foods, is screening local products.

The screening starts today, Aug. 14, 2012 from 3pm to 5pm at St. Paul's Episcopal Church behind Cafe at the Park in Garapan. Owner Debra Kay announced that Marianas Made will carry only items produced in the Mariana Islands. A cross between an art gallery and cultural gift shop, Marianas Made will carry prints, notecards, small stone and wood sculptures, beadwork, jewelry, candles, woven mats, coconut art, ceramics, wood carvings, music and more.
