John Cruz won the Saipan Golfers Association's July Ace after placing in the Top 3 of the club's monthly tournament held a few weeks ago at the Marianas Country Club in Marpi.
Cruz carded a net 72 to finish third behind Juan L. Babauta (68) and Dash Krishnan (70), who had already taken monthly Ace titles so the former was automatically declared the July Ace winner.
Actually, Cruz was tied for third with four other golfers and SGA had to go through the scorecards to break the deadlock. Cruz managed to beat Frank Castro, Juan Lizama, Larry Deleon Guerrero, Tony Deleon Guerrero in the five-player logjam and earn a ticket to the season-ending SGA Ace of the Aces tournament.
The July Ace winner joins the company of Bob Magofna (January Ace), Juan L. Babauta (February), Krishnan (March), Art Deleon Guerrero (April), Ben Aldan (May), and Ned Norita (June).
The 7 monthly winners and the remaining 5 will duke it out for the coveted SGA Cup, which Mariano Fajardo won last year. Mariano prevailed over Ray Dela Cruz, Frances M. Sablan, Tony Deleon Guerrero, Edward Manibusan, and Jess Castro.
Meanwhile, the July Ace tournament played at MCC on July 29 also featured closest to the pin and longest drive contests. Closest to the pin winners were Ed Sablan on No. 6, Frank Castro on No. 8, and Juan L. Babauta and Bob Magofna on hole Nos. 12 and 16, respectively. Adam Hardwicke swept the longest drive competitions on hole Nos. 2 and 11.
SGA also had its August Ace of the Month event last Sunday at the Kingfisher Golf Links and winners will be announced once the results are in.
