A tropical depression was formed northwest of the Marianas region yesterday morning and intensified into a tropical storm last night.
As of 7pm yesterday, Tropical Depression 16W was upgraded to tropical storm and has been named Bolaven. Its center was 300 miles west of Pagan, 365 miles northwest of Saipan, and 400 miles northwest of Guam.
As of 1pm yesterday, the center of then Tropical Depression 16W was 290 miles west of Pagan, 335 miles west-northwest of Saipan, and 365 miles northwest of Guam.
Tropical Storm Bolaven triggered heavy rain showers, causing flooding in some low-lying areas and roads on Saipan.
According to the U.S. National Weather Service, packing maximum sustained winds at 40 miles per hour, Tropical Storm Bolaven is moving toward the north-northwest at 7 mph.
As of 7pm yesterday, NWS said Bolaven is expected to slowly intensify during the next 24 to 48 hours.
Acting governor Eloy S. Inos advised residents of Saipan, Tinian, and Rota to take extra precautionary measures when driving on the highways due to heavy rain showers and possible flooding in low-lying places.
The Emergency Management Office urged the public to avoid inter-island travel by boat especially small vessels.
EMO also advised residents in the CNMI to avoid venturing near the shore as monsoon swell will create hazardous surf especially along west and south facing shores.
