Rotary youth league draws 14 teams

The Sonics' Ezra Caro goes for a reverse layup against the Ol'Aces Juan Maratita during their game in last year's Rotary caging at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium of the TSL Sports Complex. (Walter Cepeda Sutherland) Fourteen teams will be competing in the 21st Annual Rotary Club of Saipan Youth Basketball League that will kick off this Wednesday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

The 2012 season of the youth caging will have eight squads in the U16 division and six in the U20 age group. Teams vying for the U16 title include the Sonics, the Rollers Basketball Club, Hi-5, the Ol'Aces, the G-Hammers, Proa, and the two groups representing Kagman and Koblerville.

The U20 division will feature two Proa teams, two RBC Rollers groups, Hi-5, and a band from Kagman.

Last year's Rotary caging featured competition in the U19 and U15 divisions. The Sonics won the U19 crown after recording a 72-65 victory over Rollers Basketball Club's Fast 12, while Proa claimed the U15 championship after outclassing Docomo Rollers in the winner-take-all finals, 46-40.

Final meeting today

Meanwhile, the 14 teams are requested to send their representatives to the league's final meeting today at 10am at the conference room of the Ada gym.

Topics to be discussed at the meeting include the game schedule for opening night and the regular season, competition fees and ground rules, FIBA officiating and coaching courses; and other upcoming leagues and events.

This year's Rotary caging is sanctioned by Basketball Association of Northern Mariana Islands.
