Short work at Shirley's badminton tournament

Aries Cordero, right, chases a low shot, while Chris Hilario backs him up during their men's B doubles game against Puy Macario and Brandon Talania in the Shirley's badminton tournament last weekend at the TSL Sports Complex. (Roselyn B. Monroyo) Winners of all eight singles matches in the 2012 Shirley's Coffee Shop Singles/Doubles Badminton Tournament needed only two games to thwart their respective foes last Sunday at the TSL Sports Complex in Gualo Rai.

In the women's Class A, many-time singles champion Hannai Choi lived up to her lofty billing after sweeping Lani Bartolome, 21-16, 21-7. Joining Choi in the win column in the women's singles were Class B's Loida Ito and Toshiko Obata and Class C's Alma Ortega.

Ito challenged Windy Fernandez and eked out a 21-16 victory in the first game before cruising to a 21-9 win in the second to complete the sweep. In the second women's Class B singles match, Obata prevailed over U18 player Jen Savellano by 5 points in the first game, 21-16 and then escaped with a tough 21-20 triumph in the second.

Ortega won the lone women's Class C singles match played last Sunday after whipping Rose Lazaro, 21-14, 21-5.

The four men's singles matches last weekend were also decided after only two games.

In the men's Class B singles, Oh Im Bog extended his winning streak to three after sweeping Aries Cordero, 21-11, 21-7. However, Im Bog's run was halted on the same day, as he dropped his second game last Sunday against Wowie Abuel, 12-21, 0-21.

In other men's B singles results, Chris Hilario topped John Revilla, 21-15, 21-15, while the only men's Class C singles tiff played last Sunday had Ramir Belialba stunning Joel Ortego, 21-9, 21-7.

Meanwhile, eight doubles matches were also completed last Sunday with Jordan Pangilinan and Celso Agui winning the lone men's C match that took place that day. Pangilinan and Agui defeated the Korean-Chinese duo of Young Suk Kim and Shung Zun Pzao, 21-17, 21-12.

In the men's B doubles, four matches were held and only one went the distance. Abuel and John Revilla won the opening game against Cordero and Hilario, 21-19, but missed the sweep after losing the tightly fought second game, 20-21. Abuel and Revilla went on to save the win after posting a 21-16 victory in the deciding third game.

In the second men's B doubles game, Puy Macario and Brandon Talania swept Belialba and Rommel Monserrat, 21-14, 21-16, while Jexler Caranto and Joel Ortega also took the short route in beating Belialba and Monserrat, 21-18, 21-12. Oh and Raj Jayalal also recorded a victory via sweep against the tandem of Alvin Alvarez and Eric Pena, 21-12, 21-14.

In the men's A doubles, Macoi Aguda joined forces with Ferdie Arago in beating Abuel and Revilla in two games, 21-17, 21-18.

The two women's doubles matches last Sunday were also done after only two games with the duos of Elna Curate and Cristy Villaflor and Marylyn Montano and Cheng Saturno downing separate foes. Montano and Saturno trounced Obata and Fernandez, 21-13, 21-13, while Villaflor and Curate swept Loida Ito and Gigi Zapanta, 21-20, 21-11.

The Shirley's badminton tournament also had games last Friday and Saturday and results and standings in the various classes will be published before the week ends.
