Sonics vs Rollers in Monday's Rotary opener

(Walter Sutherland) The opening day of the 21st Annual Rotary Club of Saipan'Youth Basketball League has been moved to Sept. 10 at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

The kick-off date, which was originally set for yesterday, was postponed to allow teams some extra time to collect entrance fees and acquire uniforms.

Monday's opener will feature last year's U19 champion Sonics squaring off against the Rollers at 5:30pm. Five other teams are entered in the U20 division with another group from Rollers Basketball Club, two from Proa, one from Kagman, and Hi-5 joining the Sonics and Rollers.

In addition, the league's U16 division will start next Saturday with three games scheduled in the opening day. The first match tips off at 9am, the second at 10:15am, and the last 11:30am. Teams competing in the U16 division include last season's U15 champion Proa, the Sonics, the RBC Rollers, Hi-5, the Ol'Aces, the G-Hammers and one team each from Kagman and Koblerville.

Only one game will be played in the U20 division from Monday to Thursday, starting at 5:30pm, while U16 matches will only be held every Saturday morning.

Last season's Rotary caging had the Sonics winning the U19 crown after beating Rollers Basketball Club's Fast 12 in the final, 72-65. Proa took the U15 championship after edging Docomo Rollers in the one-game finals, 46-40.

This year's Rotary caging is organized by the Basketball Association of Northern Mariana Islands.
