WASHINGTON, D.C.-The Office of Insular Affairs has announced the award of $20,000 in Technical Assistance Program grant funding to the Northern Marianas College CNMI Archives to assist with the digital storage of its historical collection of regional newspapers.
“The ability to preserve these important records reflecting the rich history of the Northern Mariana Islands and our entire region is vital to the ability of future generations to connect with their past,” said Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan (Ind-MP), who had expressed his strong support for this project to Babauta.
The CNMI Archives is the primary repository for government documents within the Northern Marianas and contains a significant volume of historical materials relating to the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, and the Japanese, German, and Spanish eras of control. The Archives also houses the Pacific Collection, which contains thousands of books and other materials pertaining to the Marianas and Pacific region.
The goal of the funded program is to store and make available electronically copies of such newspapers as the Saipan Tribune, Marianas Variety, Pacific Daily News, and Marshall Islands Journal, in order to make the materials significantly more accessible and preserve their historical value for the CNMI community.
